Benvenuti a Longi,

This village has ancient origin and remote traditions.

Greeks, Byzantines and Arabs have tried to colonize over the past centuries. It has been called several names from Castrum Longum to Longum, then to Alongi, till the current name Longi, one of the most attractive village of the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. This peculiar village, composed by 1.600 inhabitants ,is located 620 mts above the sea level, in an area where the natural beauty blend with the landscape. Bordering on the north with “le Rocche del Castro”, Longi is located in a natural terrace in the picturesque valley of the Fitalia river.

A strategic location, just a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea and rather close to the highest peaks of the Nebrodi, snow-capped for most part over the year.

The village slowly developed around the castle, a beautiful twelfth-century building preserved in excellent conditions.

Longi, in fact, kept its medieval atmosphere through its narrow streets, stone stairways and steep descents. One of

the most astonishing place that has always been an significant attraction for tourists coming from all over the world is the Mother Church. The latter is enriched with

its bell tower probably built in the 15th century, a choir,a precious seventeenth-century organ and some paintings by Novelli. Another attraction to be visited is the Church of St. Annunziata where the statue of the homonymous Madonna modeled in the 16th century by Giacomo and Antonio Gagini is kept. Besides, The archaeological area of the Castro fortresses, with the remains of city walls can be an interesting destination for people who are keen to find out more about Longi’s history. As for the nature, the territory of Longi has rare landscaped environments: the forest of Mangalavite, the Stretta where the mountains seem to gather, The Biviere lake and much more.

The most characteristic fests are the Holy Week and Easter.

The rituals are ancient and often performed by wearing antique costumes. Every day is marked by special ceremonies that culminate on Sunday with U "Scontru" in the main square with the statues of the Virgin Mary and the risen Christ. An interesting peculiarity regarding the inhabitants of Longi is their strong devotion to the patron, St. Leo, which is celebrated three times a year(20th February, the first Sunday of May and 23th August along with S.S. Crucifix).

The village cares about maintaining and passing on their traditions: from homemade bread, sweets, culinary specialties to cold cuts with fine meat of the Nebrodi

black pork. The black pork festival has lately gained a lot of popularity throughout Sicily. This special kind of meat is always prepared and served every 5th January. Many meals with mushrooms are also very appreciated and rather tasty.

Due to the high presence of mushrooms in its wood , Longi has been given a a very bizarre name over time “uno di li quattru paesi di li funci” (one of the four mushroom villages). The village is also rich in craft and commercial activities that are handed down from father to son and

small companies allowing the growth of the village’s economy. Over time, in fact, many initiatives, promoted by the village administration ,have given rise to a considerable development in the tourist industry thus involving the village itself and the Nebrodi’s park. The town currently counts a great number villas, cottages,

restaurants, museums, exhibitions.
